A Shot in the Dark

Entry for March 9th, 2006

It is a sad sad day for little Lola. Yesterday we got up and got dressed, and went to the local coffee shop to meet some other young moms, just like we do every Wednesday. Then, Daddy came to get us and we drove to the doctor's office. Lola was quite excited to be there, as always, because she gets to be naked when she is there and she knows it! Undressed and enjoying her freedom from the terrible constraints of pants, Lola kicked her little legs in the air and rolled from side to side on the exam table. She was fascinated by the crinkling of the white paper covering the table, and was mesmerized by a large, graphic poster outlining the human digestive system.

Then the doctor came in and talked to her in a silly voice. Lola was eating up all of this attention. You could see her become a little suspicious when we rolled her onto her tummy, a position that is very much not her favorite. Daddy grabbed her little legs, and the doctor proceded to give her four shots. The screaming was furious.

A little cuddling and some milk calmed hurricaine Lola. I am teaching my daughter to calm herself with food...is this a problem?? Lola enjoyed several helpings of baby Tylenol yesterday, and finally I got her to go to sleep for the night. Then the power went off. Could we remember where we put the flashlights? Of course not. After a flurry of activity involving numerous stumbles and bumps, we found the light and lit several candles. I looked into the wide awake eyes of our little girl. ARG!

We all went to bed together with Lola nestled between us, as the house was becoming very cold. In the pitch dark of our bedroom we could hear one sound...Lola's head rubbing back and forth across the sheets as she tried to get first my attention, then her daddy's. After fifteen minutes of listening to her little head going back and forth, the power came back on. I was very happy to put her to bed in her own crib, where she quickly fell asleep.

This morning the poor girl had a fever, and was feeling crummy. After another dose of Vitamin T and some serious cuddling, she went down for a nap. Poor girl! Poor Mommy! Well, gotta get the housecleaning done. I see lots of rocking in my future today!
